Q. Is It Wrong To Drink Wine?
A. I Timothy 5:23 says: “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.”
“There is nothing in Paul’s counsel to Timothy which would indicate that this wine was fermented. Since alcoholic drink is categorically condemned in the rest of the Bible, (Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. (Proverbs 20:1.) Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. (Proverbs 23:29-32) And the LORD spake unto Aaron, saying, Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: [it shall be] a statute for ever throughout your generations: And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean; (Leviticus 10:8-10) Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9, 10), it is inconceivable that the New Testament church leaders would condone it. Would the apostle Paul recommend a drink which is potentially addictive, diminishes spiritual sensitivity, and devastates lives and families? Certainly not! Paul is not advocating social drinking. He is recommending grape juice as a remedy for Timothy’s delicate stomach and other infirmitives.” [above quote taken from page 30 of RADIANT LIVING]
Nobody knows, when he/she puts a cup of alcohol to his/her lips, whether that will lead to his/her becoming an alcoholic. Each cup of wine or other strong drink causes destruction of some brain cells. We need to keep all the brain cells we have in order to be able to “stand against the wiles of the devil” in these last days when the enemy is so cleverly trying to lead us astray and cause us to be lost.
Jesus would not even drink wine to quench His severe thirst or to deaden His pain when He was suffering on the cruel cross: “They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he has tasted thereof, he would not drink.” (Matthew 27:34) [Strong’s concordance says that this was a “sour wine” that was given to those who were crucified, to deaden their pain.]
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31) “If any many defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy.” (1 Corinthians 3:17)
