Q. Is Michael the Archangel, A Name for Jesus?
A. In The Greek New Testament, the word “angel” means “messenger,” and “arch” means “chief, greatest or highest.” So “archangel” simply means “highest or greatest messenger.” (Jesus did bring us the greatest message!)
The Hebrew name “Michael,” found in the Old Testament, means “who is like God” so the title Michael the archangel can be translated as “The greatest messenger who is as God.” Colossians 1:5 Who is the image of the invisible God …
The word of God tells us that “Michael” is our “Prince.” Daniel 10:21 But I will show thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
Daniel 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation [even] to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.
Daniel himself identifies this prince as the Messiah. Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
The word of God tells us that our “Prince” is “Jesus.” Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Acts 3:14-15 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
Acts 5:30-31 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
It is clear here that the voice of the archangel is the Lord Himself (The “greatest messenger.”) 1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.
This voice that raises the dead cannot be an ordinary angel for the Father gave this right to His Son. John 5:26, 28-29 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth ….
