The popular Anchors of Truth series will return to 3ABN in December, this time with Frank Fournier, president of the Adventist-laymen’s Services and Industries (ASI) and Eden Valley Institute. His topic will focus on Righteousness by Faith in the context of the three angels’ messages found in Revelation 14.
A Look Back
Seventh-day Adventists trace their beginnings to the teachings of a dynamic nineteenth century Baptist preacher named William Miller. His study of the book of Daniel led him to believe that something very special would happen in 1844—namely, that Christ would return to take His people to Heaven. History records that up to 100,000 Christians abandoned their fields and labors, waiting all day and into the night in the great expectation that the Lord Jesus would appear in the clouds of glory. However, when this did not happen, their grief was devastating. What had happened? How could they have been so wrong? Sadly, thousands of them abandoned their faith altogether, and October 22, 1844, became known as “The Great Disappointment.”
But the error was not in Miller’s calculation. The error was in the nature of the event that took place. Jesus had not failed them; they had simply failed to understand what actually happened that day. William Miller had assumed that the “cleansing of the sanctuary” mentioned in Daniel 8:14 represented the earth being purified at Christ’s Second Coming. What he did not understand was that, just as the earthly sanctuary in the wilderness must be cleansed, the same must go on in the Heavenly Sanctuary in preparation for the Great Judgment Day.
Our Turn to Decide
Seventh-day Adventists believe that since 1844, God has wanted to do a great work in our hearts—a work that will purify and prepare us for the outpouring of His Holy Spirit. When this is accomplished, the Latter Rain will fall and the earth will be enlightened with the glory of His character! However, many have never understood this. Instead of embracing Righteousness by Faith, they’ve focused instead on distinct doctrines, and have lost sight of the big picture.
Now it’s our turn to decide. Will we do as the last four generations have done? What will we do with the gift of God’s dear Son and His all-powerful righteousness?
