God's Little Black Box

“I had to take off two weeks because of the emotional stress, they were friends of mine.” These words came near the end of our conversation. Terry, our flight attendant was sharing his story of two weeks ago when Continental Flight 3407 went down in upper New York State. All fifty were killed aboard the plane that evening.

“I was supposed to be on that plane,” tears were welling up in his reddened eyes by this time. “My mother raised me to be a God fearing man, and I give Jesus the glory that my life was spared. I know that He still has a plan for my life.”

As Shelley and I were waiting in the Newark Airport lobby for our next flight, Captain Tilley, an airline pilot, and a flight attendant awaiting their next flight joined us. A conversation between the four of us led to Continental Flight 3407. We were politely asking the typical “who, what, where, and why” questions. Captain Tilley answered carefully and articulately that within a year the authorities would know exactly what happened. He informed us that after they studied all the angles of collision and with the aid of the “little black box” they would know the speed, flight controls, wing flaps, de-icing of the wings, etc. Then the decision would be accessible to the world. Until then, closure will have to wait for many. However, truth will prevail, for the “little black box” records all.

The words “truth will prevail and all records will be known” captured my mind. Malachi 3:16 “Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord listened and heard them; ‘so a book of remembrance was written before Him, for those that fear the Lord and who meditate on His name.”’

Every man’s work passes in review before God and is registered for faithfulness or unfaithfulness. Opposite each name in the books of heaven is entered with terrible exactness every wrong word, every selfish act, every unfulfilled duty, and every secret sin, with every artful dissembling. Heaven-sent warnings or reproofs neglected, wasted moments, unimproved opportunities, the influence exerted for good or for evil, with its far-reaching results, all are chronicled by the recording angel. {Great Controversy pg. 482.1}

The “Book of Remembrance” and the “Book of Life” is the Christian’s “little black box” that records all things. Our ending destination depends on truth. It is only fair and just that “The Authority—Jesus Christ” has truth at His hand so that if ever questioned, He has our words and deeds recorded and they will withstand time and argument. I ask you today, are you at a place in which you feel content and confident in your destination? Do you need a check list to make sure all things are working properly? Do you think you are secure in flying your own plane per se or do you think it better to be the co-pilot and let the Lord be in the pilot’s chair?

Revelation 20:12 “And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and the books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the ‘Book of Life.’ And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.”’ I still can hear Terry’s words as they tearfully came from his mouth “My mother raised me to be a God fearing man, and I give Jesus the glory that my life was spared. I know that He still has a plan for my life.” I pray that you are giving God the glory that only He deserves and that your actions and words are being inscribed in the “Book of Life.”
